Packet Pickup & Registration Volunteers

If you are helping with packet pickup on July 3 from 4p-7p and on July 4 morning rom 7:30a-8:15a, make your way to the Civic Green where we will be set up.  Volunteers from our staff and the local Kiwanis group are the point people for this operation.

Set Up & Tear Down

If you are able to assist with set up, please arrive by 6:00a at the Civic Green to help with getting signs, tables, water, and many other things in their final places and ready to go!

If you are able to assist with tear down, we are out of there as fast as possible but usually no later than 11.

Start & Finish Line

The Start and Finish Line both occur at the Civic Green in Downtown Yorktown, IN.

Race Day responsibilities include:

  • Keep the finish chute clear of spectators
  • Ensure that only athletes are entering the post race food and recovery area
  • Help distribute food and drink and watch for any medical needs among participants finishing.
  • Make sure that every finisher gets a medal including fun runners.
  • Encourage folks to stick around for the awards ceremony (especially with new prizes) and interact with vendors.
  • Provide assistance as needed to the timing, scoring, and prize volunteers.

On Course Spotters & Directing Participant Traffic

Proceed to your assigned area.  Be loud, clear and energetic when giving directions to participants.  Assist in keeping spectators off the race course with firm directions. Ensure that everyone goes in the right directions, especially as the course has recently changed.

  • Back of the course by YMCA and 600 (on the trail, not the road)

  • PVE Split northbound (on the trail)

  • PVE Split southbound (on the road)

  • On Tiger Drive Southbound (Turn Into Morrow's Meadow)

  • On Morrow's Meadow Road (Turn Right onto the trail)

  • In Morrow's Meadow Trail at Bathroom (turn right behind Pizza King)

  • At Walking Bridge Behind Pizza King (onto the footbridge, and watch out for walkers straggling as the elite runners arrive hold them off if necessary)

  • Top of the hill (turn right, home stretch!)

Water Station Tiger Drive and River Road

Near Pleasant View Elementary

You will park in the front circle lot of PVE and walk to the intersection of Tiger/River. Shirts will be brought to you before the start time. Once the road is closed you will move all tables to the center of the road. Fill your cups half full of water and be ready to pass them out no later than 8 a.m. Fast runners will prefer for you to hold the cup out balanced on the palm of your hand. With your arm fully extended straight out while they grab it from you. You should not hang on to the cup for the faster lead runners. All athletes should be staying to their right which will allow you to stay close to the tables, but feel free to SPREAD OUT. Faster runners want options to get water without being congested. If it’s a hot or humid day, they will take it! As they return to you off the sports park trail loop you will need to be prepared for two way traffic. Stay in the middle of the road and be careful about crossing the road to the outside as you create a tunnel effect for the runners. When on the outside, avoid standing on the roadway, instead stay in the grass. In addition, be loud, cheering and having fun. If someone has a large portable entertainment system, bring some good upbeat music to keep everyone having fun!

Water Station Morrow's Meadow

You may park in Morrow's Meadow wherever is conveninet, go to west end (back of the park) where you will find your water aid stations. Shirts will be brought to you before the start time. You should have your cups half full of water and be ready to pass them out no later than 8 a.m. The fun runners will be coming to you first but they will turn off the trail onto the main road right before they get to you. Cheer them on to the roadway but do not offer them water unless they are desperately looking for it. Once the 4 milers approach you, you will want to keep the trail wide open and position yourself on both sides of the trail creating a tunnel effect. Do not stand on the trail, stay in the grass, leave enough room for 3 to come by side by side. Faster runners want options to get water without being congested. If it’s a hot humid day, they will take it! Fast runners will prefer for you to hold the cup out balanced on the palm of your hand. Heartbreak Hill

Make your way to Pizza King and directly behind it is a small walking bridge. You will need to station one traffic director there to assist with ensuring the turn happens and that people are making room for faster runners.

Once across the bridge, just 1/4 mile from the finish is a pretty intense hill. Station people up and down it, run with people, cheer people on, provide encouragement, be loud, cheer like crazy!

Station one individual at the top who directs people to the right down Canal where the finish line is just .2 miles away. "Sprint Hard!"

Volunteer Parking

Park wherever you find convenient to your plans and duties. Public parking, Yorktown United Methodist Church, Yorktown Middle School, Morrow's Meadow, etc.

The start and Finish Line are at the Civic Green next to the Town Hall in downtown, Yorktown, IN.
